The American Holistic Medical Association (AHMA) and the International College of Integrative Medicine (ICIM) are tremendously pleased to introduce Alice Lee-Bloem MD at our coming conference in Nashville, TN. Visit www.integrativemedicineconference.com for details.
Alice Lee-Bloem, MD, ABIHM http://holisticpsychiatrist.com/ is a holistic and integrative psychiatrist who integrates at least three fields of study: allopathic psychiatry, orthomolecular psychiatry, and energy medicine. Each field has its history of supporting scientific and empirical evidence: biochemistry, neuroanatomy, nutrition, quantum physics, and Eastern medicine.
She graduated from the University of Maryland in adult psychiatry, spending a whole year concentrating on the treatment of eating disorders. Then she trained as a child and adolescent psychiatrist at Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C. Her work in orthomolecular psychiatry began when she encountered patients who came to her young, chronically ill despite being heavily medicated, and debilitated by medication side effects. Her search to help these young people find a better way to health led to nutritional supplements, and her clinical experiences with them convinced her that they had powerful healing value. Those patients have been able to come off all medications and move on with their lives.
Summary of her lecture: Mental illness deprives society of the joy and contribution of millions of otherwise functional and productive people. Present treatment approaches have failed to address the multiple factors that affect ultimate outcomes. Practical principles, patterns, and application of “orthomolecular” nutritional approaches and even more tantalizing benefits that might be possible with “energy medicine” in the treatment of mental illness will be discussed. Clinical case studies will highlight the practical application of tools within each field to various diagnostic and age settings, and the recovery process will be explored. Finally, how to avoid problems associated with the integration of these two powerful healing modalities will be discussed.
Learning objectives
1. Exploration of concepts and principles found in energy medicine relevant to the clinical treatment of mental illness.
2. Patterns and principles in the integrative application of orthomolecular nutrition and energy medicine to the treatment of mental illness (clinical case studies).
3. Patterns and principles associated with recovery from mental illness.
4. How to avoid problems associated with the integrative application of orthomolecular medicine with energy medicine.

I’m contacting you today, because Senator McCain has just introduced a bill that would wipe out even the minimal protections for dietary supplements contained in DSHEA. This bill gives the FDA full discretion and power to compile a discreet list of supplements allowed to remain on the market while banning all others. As you know, this would devastate the integrative health community.
We have just sent out an action alert to all of our readers asking them to contact their senators and oppose this bill.
It is vital that our industry launch a collaborative attack on this bill. Would you please ask your members to go to https://secure3.convio.net/aahf/site/Advocacy?cmd=display&page=UserAction&id=510 and take action? It’s critical that we send a swift and strong message to the senate not to co-sponsor this bill. If the bill gains enough co-sponsors, it could be attached to an appropriations or other bill in the senate, where it would pass easily.
To read more about this issue, please read the article we have just posted on our website http://www.anh-usa.org/new_site/?p=2307
Thank you in advance for your help.
Best,
Gretchen

Dr. Low Dog is an internationally-known speaker on topics ranging from the responsible use of herbal medicine and dietary supplements to integrative approaches to women’s health--with more than 30 publications to her credit. She serves on the editorial/advisory boards of Menopause and Explore journals, Prevention magazine and the American Botanical Council. She has appeared on E!, ABC’s 20/20, CNN, and is a frequent guest of NPR’s The People’s Pharmacy. Dr. Low Dog writes a regular column for Alternative and Complementary Therapies magazine called "Smart Talk on Supplements and Botanicals". Low Dog serves on the faculty of the Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona.
Her ICIM/AHMA lecture is entitled, Nutritional Deficiency Impact on Depression and Anxiety.
Mood disorders, particularly depression, have a high rate of co-morbidity with both mental health and medical problems. Depressive disorders are common among patients with chronic medical conditions. Even when appropriately treated, depression recurs in 50-70% of those affected. Given the side effects of conventional antidepressants, many patients turn to the use of dietary supplements in an attempt to improve their mood and prevent recurrence. Unfortunately, many patients do not disclose their supplement use to their provider, and most clinicians are not familiar enough with the evidence of safety and benefit of supplements to effectively counsel patients about their use. This session will update clinicians on the science regarding dietary supplements/botanicals commonly used for depression and anxiety.
Learning Objectives – Participants will be able to…
1. Discuss the evidence for safety and benefit of dietary supplements in the clinical setting of depression.
2. Discuss the evidence for safety and benefit of dietary supplements in the clinical setting of anxiety.
3. Describe the evidence for safety and benefit for herbal medicines commonly resorted to by patients in their search for non-drug approaches to better mental health.
